Hi Ralph- Just noticed we are neighbors, I am in Irvine. I do mostly tropical fish barcoding and I have collections from Baja, Galapagos, and points south. I was wondering if you have barcodes for our local representatives of tropical families- like the wrasses Oxyjulis and Halichoeres and Rhinogobius? i should stop by and visit your facility some time.

Dear Ralph,

A very warm welcome to this network! As David says, I'm interested in meeting both educational and research goals through DNA barcoding through a new project called BarkCode. I'm also Director of Science for The HMS Beagle Project which seeks to rebuild the Beagle for science, learning and public engagement.

I have heard of your work before but am delighted to see how much we have in common here and look forward to communicating ...maybe even collaborating.

Welcome to the Barcode of Life Community Network. The Education group was set up by Karen James, a botanist at the Natural History Museum London. She is running a field-based barcoding activity called BarkCode. She gave a plenary presentation on it at the barcode conference in Mexico City last week. We also had the Invitrogen people exhibit a small sequencer and they gave a talk on miniaturization of sequencers.

I hope you'll get active in this group and will post some of your instructional material. People will be eager to see it. Let me know if you have problems using the site. It works more or less like Facebook.

Welcome aboard!
